Open Source vs Open Source

Surrounded by the choices

In today’s world we have so many options to choose from when it comes to Open-Source Web development and its always a tough decision for an organization or new start-up to decide on technology.

When I lost in these choices I also got answers for questions - which are with me from very long time. The role of Art Director in a film project or role/importance of orchestra’s conductor.

Sometimes you learn from experience but in this case what I realize is, sometime you understand from experience.

If you go for Open-Source CMS (Content Management System), the most popular choices are:
  • WordPress
  • Joomla
  • Drupal
  • Concrete 5
  • Moodle
  • Django CMS etc…

While working in UAE - I realize challenge for this region is to support RTL Language with LTR and they are not much aware of their future needs or don’t spend enough time to understand the technology and Pros / Cons of each platform or they are not able to make comparison between different platforms.

Sometime selection of wrong or expensive technology disturb their budgets - sometimes wrong choice of technology limit them to re-start or build from scratch.

I think, fundamentally, open source does tend to be more stable software. It's the right way to do things.

Linus Torvalds

I will start comparison of technology in my next article - in this opening article, I want to address what we are going to discuss next and people who are in similar situation and want to make decisions with better understanding of technology and platforms.
